About Blue Mind

A calmer mindset—powered by water.

What is Blue Mind?

Blue Mind describes the calm, clear, mildly meditative state many people feel when they’re near water. The idea became widely known through the work of marine biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, author of Blue Mind, who explored why humans are drawn to water and how blue spaces may support well-being.

From “Red Mind” to “Blue Mind”

Most of us spend our days in Red Mind—overstimulated, rushed, stressed, distracted. Blue Mind is the opposite: calmer, steadier, more present. Even a short moment near water can feel like your brain and body finally exhale.

What counts as “blue space”?

  • Oceans and beaches

  • Bays, rivers, lakes, ponds

  • Pools and fountains

  • Aquariums

  • Rain, showers, or water sounds

  • Art, photography, or imagery of the sea

“We are beginning to learn that our brains are hardwired to react positively to water…” — Wallace J. Nichols
